try a rubber band or a hair tie wrapped around the reed and the mouth piece like a real ligature would. it has to be really tight or else it won't work. a makeshift ligature doesn't always work out so well, nothing is better than the real thing. they only cost about $2-$3 dollars

Well, as someone else said- way back when, reeds were tied up, so I suggest you try and find a piece of leather (or a hair tie or something), and tie it up.
Or rather just go and buy a ligature, it doesn't have to be a good one if you're just borrowing the sax for a short time.
Also, if you plan on continueing, rather buy a good mouthpiece PLUS ligature. Will save you a lot of trouble!

In the old days woodwind reeds were tied on, so try some thin strong string like heavy sewing thread or dental floss- it has to be wrapped very closely and tightly.

Any ideas?
I was recently given a soprano to borrow, and there;s no ligature. I won't see the owner until Thursday, but i want to play it.
