Im not sure of the technical details.. But one thing I am sure is both brightness and contrast as important and they serve different purposes... What I can offer is to first compare brightness and Contrast in Monitors in Laymen's terms..
Contrast I know is the percentage of black you add to the screen of your monitor.. If you lower the Contrast that means you decrease the amount of Black you add to the screen
While brightness is the percentage of White light you add to the screen.. If you increase the brightness that means you increase the amount of white light you add to the screen
I suggest you balance the brightness and contrast depending on the ambiance of your room.. or it depends upon the condition of your own eyes.. Try to play with both brightness and contrast and see the results..
I do that and Hope this helps. |

300cd/m² = 300 candles per square meter. Higher is better (brighter).
Without brightness, contrast is meaningless (you won't be able to see it).
Without contrast there is no picture, just uniform light across the screen. |

is a bigger number or a smaller numerical value better?
on an x2gen monitor it lists a brightness of 300cd/m2
is that good or bad and what is the brightness? |
