The time between the Napoleonic Wars and World War I was the height of the British Empire, a time mostly occupied by the reign of Queen Victoria and featuring wars involving Britain’s imperial conquests and global interventions. The Crimean War was at the center of this time, and the Boer War was near its end, but much of British military and naval might was involved in the addition of India to the empire. Domestically, the industrial revolution was driving social and political change, often in harsh ways as dramatized in the works of Charles Dickens. It was a time when the sun never set on the British Empire and england “ruled the waves.” |
