go to REI if you have one near you, better yet, go online.
also search for backpacking groups online who can give you personal experiences to help you with your trip.
I would also get online and look for backpacker magazines online, then buy one and read it, read all you can about where you are going, and what is around to do.
Also, look for Rick Steves online, he has been doing shows on europe, and has stayed in hostels a LOT. He has a show on PBS,too.
I would also get on to BBC.UK and read the news from there...but that's just me, probably, it will tell you a wealth of things you can think about doing.

check out www.ricksteves.com -- he's the king of independent travel, and there's all sorts of good, general info on his website, plus a railpass & Travel gear store.
for other Travel gear, you might also try Magellan's -- www.magellans.com . Some of their stuff is fancy and expensive, but they also carry a lot of good basic stuff like Travel towels, plug & voltage adapters, etc. There's also some useful articles there, too.
If you're interested in travelling through Bavaria, definetly check out www.bensbauernhof.com --lost of useful info, plus trip reports and hotel recommendations. (You can often find pretty reasonable accomodations in Germany at local B&Bs, called Gasthoefe, and they ususally include breakfast, too.)
Finally, to check any train schedules, visit the Deutsche Bahn's website at http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/… .
Good general train Travel info, and you can also find custom timetables for your trip.

I'm in my mid-20's, never been to europe before. I have vouchers for air travel.. but I need to stay in youth hostels etc wherever I stay. I'm traveling alone and I have about 3-4 months to plan everything. Any good websites, blogs, etc that would detail how to plan train rides, where to stay, and whatnot?
