I would not do a semi-rimless in an RX that high. You can certainly try it if your heart is set on that frame, but make sure you have exchange options if you aren't happy with the thickness.

Any lens in a -9.25 is going to be at least somewhat thick, and there's no way around it. A semi-rimless lens is always going to be a little thicker than a full frame lens, and that's the last thing you need. My -4.50 semi-rimless 1.67 high index is slightly more than half a centimeter at the outside edge. A 1.74 tends to be ground a little thicker in the middle to keep the AR from showing stress marks (not to mention it has to pass FDA safety standards on center thickness if you're in the US), and the edges generally end up about the same as a 1.67. A small frame might have a chance of turning out okay, but a semi-rimless in a 53 eye in your RX is going to be big. If you have a narrow PD, it will be even worse on the edges because of the decentration. I'm thinking your edges will probably be around a centimeter, and that's not a thickness most patients are happy with.

Smaller frames are always better with high RXs. Full frames are the best choice, and plastic is better than metal. You already know all of this. If you're tired of following all those rules, by all means take a shot at something new! Just cover your bases and make sure you have options for return or exchange if the results aren't what you'd like.

Btw, the ABBE values on the 1.74 aren't that different than the 1.67, but the price difference is usually significant. If you go with a full zyl fame, you might be able to save a few bucks by going to the 1.67 with no appreciable difference in vision or thickness.

I am a high myopic patient with a prescription of: OD -7.50 -0.75 x172 OS -9.25 -0.50 x008. Currently, I have 1.74 lenses in a 49mm frame/19mm bridge that is "rectangularish" in shape with slightly rounded corners. I am in the market for new frames that are a little more stylish and "boutiquey" but will stay with the 1.74 lenses. I have been drawn to some Barton Perreira frames, particularly the Floyd, a semi-rimless frame with a 53mm diameter/17mm bridge, and the Blake, a fully rimmed zyl frame with a 47mm diameter/20mm bridge (see www.bartonperreira.com). Clearly the fully rimmed 47mm zyl would do the most to minimize the edge thickness, but I prefer the semi-rimless. My dispensing optician, who spent much of his career as a frame designer, believes that the semi-rimless frame has enough bulk and scale to match and absord much of the lens thickness, and that the slight wrap of the frame coupled with a good polish will make for a satisfactory look. Bottom line, I'm seeking second opinions of these frame options and also wondering if there are any general guidelines as to frame size (in mm diameter) for various prescriptions. Sorry for the long message and thank you in advance for any input.
