Sometimes I think it does exactly the opposite in that there are people out there who like to be contrarians and don't like to see so many positive responses, so they respond negatively. |

as for money in the hat, they put some in to start because what you say is partly true. but it cant overcome a completely opposite reaction.
if I hate the sound of someones music or the message in their answer i wont change my opinion because someone else thought differently. |

YES. People are much more likely to follow the crowd than strike out on their own, unfortunately. I've noticed that even if two answers say basically the same thing, if one of them gets a thumbs-up, it will wind up with far more than the other one! Stuff like that bugs me. |

When a street musician places a few of his or her own dollars in a hat, it is to make it appear as if people have previously given money, in order to encourage others to add to it.
Does the same principle apply to Yahoo! Answers?
When people see a thumbs-up rating, are they more likely to read that answers first, and add another thumbs-up rating to it, as opposed to answers that did not receive a positive rating? |
