If you download Linux "applications", you're usually downloading source code. You have to compile it. Using the Synaptic GUI for apt-get makes it much easier - you're downloading (and installing) binaries already compiles for Ubuntu.
If you want to run Windows programs (like WinRAR), install Wine and Wine Doors. There are still a few things that haven't been ported to Linux. (WinRAR isn't one of them - there are native Linux programs that can handle zip and rar files. Look in Synaptic.)

i'm new to Ubuntu. I tried to download Winrar the other day to my ubuntu but when i do ubuntu sends an error saying An error occurred while loading the archive.(null). That's the case for almost every application from internet.please help
